Interpreting BMI index calculator

According to the BMI calculator the higher your BMI number the higher the percentage of fat on the body. If your BMI is under 20, you might be underweight. Between 20 and 25, you are probably at a good healthy weight for your height. A BMI over 25 is considered overweight, and over 35 is considered obese.

BMI Body Fat CalculatorA point to note about BMI is that it doesn’t do is take into account the weight of your muscles, bones and organs which make it inaccurate in actually find out your precise body fat levels.

Take for example a 250 lbs bodybuilder and a 250 lbs fast food eating coach potato.

According to the BMI chart above both would have identical figures. However, the bodybuilder who has an abundance of muscle mass and a 5% body fat is hardly overweight right?!

The same is true for physical traits such as organs and more so bone weight which can vary from person to person.

BMI for women

BMI for womenFrequently, Women tend to carry more body fat than men, especially in the midsection, so their percent body fat may be augmented without it necessarily being reflected in their BMI or having any adverse health effects.

As a conclusion is you’re an average person who doesn’t undertake resistance training in the form of weights or otherwise then BMI is useful (not great!) means of determining whether you need to lose or gain weight.
