In fact, at the age of 16 when I wanted to make some changes to my body I didn't even know that what I actually wanted to do was gain lean muscle mass.
The one thing I did know is that I wanted to get bigger and stronger.
This was my goal because I was always skinny growing up and I guess I felt a bit inferior to other guys and as a result my self esteem wasn't the best.

I'm a good few years on from that time when I initially started out with gyms workouts to gain more muscle mass but I must say -being on the opposite spectrum of things- those years of adding muscle mass have had a hugely positive impact on my life in terms of self confidence and other aspects such as performance in sports which was another main reason for training hard.Much of what I did growing up wasn't that effective and I must say that I wasted a lot of time with gym routines when I could have been doing other things.
However, I preserved through these times and I picked a lot of knowledge up along the way.
How to make significant Muscle Gains
Today, If I wanted to gain weight and muscle mass I would expect to gain somewhere around 8 lbs in a month. Like most people I wouldn't be able to sustain these kind of muscle gains every month but if were to continue I would expect to gain somewhere between 3-5 lbs for the following few months after that.
The gains vary from
situation to situation. Take for example someone
who is young and growing or someone who has just started out weight
training routines and muscle building diets. These people always
experience the best gains in muscle mass.When I eventually got the muscle building formula right -and by these I mean a great Diet and Workout- I actually gained a staggering 22lbs!
Now not all of this was pure lean muscle, I did add a few lbs of body fat also but being honest most of it was muscle.
I was about 18 at the time I finally got it right and being honest, the previous two years when I was trying to gain muscle mass were a bit of a waste.
I would go to the gym 4 and sometimes even 5 days a week and lift weights right throughout the summer months and at the end of it all the scales would still slide up to the same figure... 70kg (~150lb)... ahh!
